Smart Cut and Paste

How to disable, enable or customize the smart-cut-and-paste behavior to correspond to a particular version of Word, or choose custom settings that suit you.

  1. Select some text and press Delete to delete the selection. Word also deletes the space after the selection.
  2. Double-click a word, and then replace it by typing any other word. Notice that you don’t have to type a space after writing the new word. Word inserts the space for you.
  3. Copy a sentence and then paste it at the end of another sentence, Word automatically inserts a space between the period and the beginning of the pasted sentence.

Word inserts and deletes spaces because the Smart Cut And Paste feature is enabled in the Word Options. If you are not satisfied with this feature, you can then either simply uncheck the “Use smart cut and paste” box to turn off the feature altogether, or click the Settings button and use the options in the Settings dialog box to produce more acceptable behavior.

To disable this feature, follow these steps:

  1. Click File tab and choose Options, the Options dialog box appears.
  2. Click the Advanced option
  3. Uncheck the “Use smart cut and paste” box from the Cut, copy, and paste group:
  4. Click OK
